Hydroquinone Lawsuit

Our attorneys are investigating hydroquinone lawsuits for people that have developed cancer after using the skin bleaching cream. If you have used the cream and have been diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), contact us to schedule an evaluation of your case.

Hydroquinone is a skin-bleaching cream sold under at least 30 brand names. These creams work because the hydroquinone they contain suppresses the formation in the skin of melanin, a pigment forming substance. When you get suntanned, it is because the skin produces melanin in response to exposure to the sun.

The creams are used to treat:

  • Freckles
  • Age spots
  • Skin discoloration on the face due to pregnancy or use of hormones (chloasma or melasma)

Hydroquinone Acute Myelogenous Injury Lawsuits

Hydroquinone has been linked to acute myelogenous leukemia, a cancer of the bone marrow and the white blood cells produced in the marrow.

If you have used any of these products, then suffered from AML or serious side effects to your skin, you may have grounds for a lawsuit to be compensated for the pain and suffering you have experienced. The best way to know if you have a legitimate case is to call a lawyer who has experience handling cases involving defective and harmful products.

Hydroquinone Side Effect Injury Law

In addition to the serious side effect linking hydroquinone to AML, it can cause serious injury to the skin.

These skin problems include severe:

  • Reddening
  • Burning
  • Itching
  • Inflammation

The FDA and Hydroquinone Studies

In March 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a question and answer list to respond to the many questions it had been asked about the safety of hydroquinone.

In 2002, the FDA had said that, based on the recommendation of a panel of outside experts, it ruled that hydroquinone could be considered generally safe and effective.

Then, in 2006, after looking at new data from animal research, the FDA considered banning hydroquinone, but concluded it needed to study the question further. The federal agency recommended that the National Toxicology Program (NTP) conduct additional animal studies to determine if the products could be considered safe and effective.

The FDA asked the NTP to conduct:

  • Comparative studies of hydroquinone in rats and mice that were given the substance orally or by placing it on their skin
  • Studies to determine if the substance had any toxic effects on the reproductive activity of the animal subjects when it was given orally
  • Studies to determine if hydroquinone caused skin cancer in the laboratory animals

The FDA said it needed to determine several more steps before beginning the studies.
