Illinois sues Shell Pipeline for benzene contamination
The Illinois attorney general's office has sued Shell Pipeline, alleging Shell Pipeline officials knew about the 200 tons of soil they dumped at a landfill that was contaminated with benzene. The lawsuit asks for the company to pay $50,000 for each law violation and $10,000 for each day these violations occurred. Officials claim they were unaware of the contaminated soil. Research has shown benzene exposure can cause cancer.
