Benzene ContaminationSeptember 17, 2004 Illinois sues Shell Pipeline for benzene contamination The Illinois attorney general's office has sued Shell Pipeline, alleging Shell Pipeline officials knew about the 200 tons of soil they dumped at a landfill that was contaminated with benzene. The lawsuit asks for the company to pay $50,000 for each law violation and $10,000 for each day these violations occurred. Officials claim they were unaware of the contaminated soil. Research has shown benzene exposure can cause cancer.
